Weekly Update 1/17

Hello KA Parents,

It has been such a blessing to have the kindergarten students join the school community at mass the last two weeks.  They have been great listeners, and are working on participating in the prayers, songs, and responses.  We have been learning about the different liturgical seasons and celebrations in the church calendar, and paying special attention to the colors that the priest wears.

Next week we will be focusing on the letter Hh, and the sight word “are”.  In math, we will be working with larger numbers.

Next week, kindergarten students will take the kindergarten MAP test in reading.  This is a short, computer-based test used throughout the archdiocese to help assess student growth over time.

Catholic Schools Week is coming!  This is one of my favorite times of the year, as our school celebrates with Catholic schools across the nation, to recognize the important work and blessings of Catholic education.

***Please note that the homework from last week (Due Friday) has a special project for Catholic Schools week.  Students will decorate a student cut-out to look like themselves in school uniform.  Be creative!  Feel free to use paints, paper, cloth, or anything you like!  This is due 1/19.

  • Sunday Jan. 28- Catholic Schools Week Begins.  Students, wear your uniform when you attend mass to show support for our school! SMM Open House 11:00-2:00.  I hope to see you there!  Please feel free to bring family , friends, and neighbors to show them all of the fantastic things happening at SMM, including our new upcoming full-day preschool and pre-k!
  • Monday Jan. 29- Free dress for anyone who wore uniform to mass.
  • Tuesday Jan. 30- Peace Day, students may wear their blue SMM peace shirts (or regular uniform)
  • Thursday Feb. 1- Special Person Day SAVE THE DATE! ***Students can invite a special visitor (parent, grandparent, aunt/uncle, etc.) to visit our classroom and attend the Distinguished Graduate Assembly.  Please let Mrs. White know who will be visiting the KA classroom!
  • Friday Feb. 2- Nations Day! Wear red, white, and blue OR the colors or traditional dress of their family’s heritage.  Dress to show your national pride!

Looking ahead:

  • 100th day of school is coming up on Friday Feb. 9th.  In KA, we celebrate the 100th day of school in a big way!  Students are invited to dress up like they are 100 years old (think grey hair, granny glasses, canes, etc.), and we will have a parade through the school to show everyone our counting skills.
  • Valentine’s day/Mardi Gras.  Since Valentine’s day falls on Ash Wednesday this year, we will celebrate Valentine’s day on Tues. Feb. 13th.  Students are invited to bring Valentine cards to share.  Please make sure to bring enough for every student in class; we have 18 students.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know!

White, Katie

Mrs. White is so excited for another great year in KA! She has been at SMM since 2014, and has been teaching in Catholic schools since 2002. Over the years, Mrs. White has taught many grade levels and subjects, but kindergarten is her absolute favorite! She loves being part of the early learning process and seeing the amazing connections that kindergarteners make every day. Mrs. White graduated with a BA in education and history from CWU (go Wildcats!) and earned a M.Ed. from Seattle U (go Redhawks!) She lives in Everett with her husband and two sons. Some of Mrs. White's favorites, in no particular order: Dogs, Chocolate, Hiking, Books, and Snow!
