Weekly Update 1/31

Hello KA Parents,

Happy Catholic Schools Week!  It was great seeing so many of you at mass on Sunday, and at the Open House!

Next week we will be reviewing the letters h, d, and r, and the sight words “are”, “for”, and “you”. In math, we will continue working on teen numbers, and preparing for our 100th day of school!  We will also begin a science unit about pets!  If you have a picture of a family pet, past or present, please send a picture to class.  Or, if you do not have any pets, your child can bring a picture of a friend or family member’s pet, or a pet they wish they had!   Thank you.

***Please note: The homework (due Friday) includes a bag for “100 things”: Please put 100 of the same items in the Ziploc bag.  (Make sure it is something you don’t need back!)  Ideas include cotton balls, beads, cheerios, straws, etc.  Be creative!  Your child can practice counting by 1s and by 10s for homework.  Parents, please check to make sure it is 100, as we will be using these in class next week for a special art project.

Tomorrow, Thursday 2/1, is Special Person Day!  Your child’s special person (parent, grandparent, family member, special friend, etc.) can visit our classroom at 1:15.  (If you have more than one sibling “sharing” one special person, it is OK for them to go with their special person to the older child’s classroom.)  Everyone will go to the church at 1:45 for the distinguished graduate assembly.

Friday, 2/2 is Nations Day!  Wear the colors or traditional dress of your national heritage, or wear red, white and blue.

Upcoming Dates:

  • Friday Feb. 9th– 100th day of school!  In KA, we celebrate the 100th day of school in a big way!  Students are invited to dress up like they are 100 years old (think grey hair, granny glasses, canes, etc.), and we will have a parade through the school to show everyone our counting skills.  Thank you to those who have signed up to bring items for our special 100 day snack! (Please send them in the day before).
  • Tuesday Feb. 13th– Valentine’s day/Mardi Gras.  Since Valentine’s day falls on Ash Wednesday this year, we will celebrate Valentine’s day on Tues. Feb. 13th.  Students are invited to bring Valentine cards to share.  Please make sure to bring enough for every student in class; we have 18 students.    Thank you to those who have signed up to bring items for our Valentine Cookie decorating!
  • Wednesday Feb. 14th– Ash Wednesday- Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.  We will attend Mass at the regular time. This is a longer mass that usual, and the students will receive ashes on their forehead.  We will learn about Lent and Ash Wednesday ahead of time.  The ashes symbolize being sorry for our sins, and recognizing the Lenten season of remembering Jesus’s death and resurrection.
  • Friday Feb. 16th– No school, teacher in-service day.
  • Monday Feb. 19th and Tuesday Feb. 20th No school, Presidents Day/Mid-winter break.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know!

White, Katie

Mrs. White is so excited for another great year in KA! She has been at SMM since 2014, and has been teaching in Catholic schools since 2002. Over the years, Mrs. White has taught many grade levels and subjects, but kindergarten is her absolute favorite! She loves being part of the early learning process and seeing the amazing connections that kindergarteners make every day. Mrs. White graduated with a BA in education and history from CWU (go Wildcats!) and earned a M.Ed. from Seattle U (go Redhawks!) She lives in Everett with her husband and two sons. Some of Mrs. White's favorites, in no particular order: Dogs, Chocolate, Hiking, Books, and Snow!
