Weekly Update 10/10

Hello KA Families,

We are having another fun week in KA, and I hope to see many of you Thursday at math night.  The kindergarten math stations will be set up in the library.  There will be other activities in the first, second, and third grade classrooms.

Next week we will be focusing on new letter Pp, and sight words “see”, “like” and “a”.  As I have been working with reading groups during literacy stations, it has been so exciting to hear the students reading more independently and recognizing our sight words!  You can help support your student in their learning by talking about letter sounds and sight words as you read together.

In math, we are working on recognizing and writing numbers, as well as counting one-to-one.  This means we touch each object as we count, or mark each item with our pencil, to get an accurate count.

In religion, we will be teaching the first of two lessons on Touching Safety.  This is the kindergarten lesson from Virtus, which teaches children about keeping themselves safe, respecting and protecting their bodies, and telling a safe grown up right away if something doesn’t seem right.  (If you do NOT want your student to be part of this lesson, please let me know.  I can provide you with an “opt-out” form.)

We are very excited about our kindergarten field trip next Friday (Oct. 19th)!  Students may wear free dress, please dress for the weather and for mud at the farm. All students will need to ride in their car seat or booster.  If your child will be in a carpool, please be sure to send their seat with the to school!  We plan to leave school at about 10:45 and return at about 2:30.

Reminders:

  • Library books are due back each Thursday.
  • Please be sure your child comes to school with a weather-appropriate jacket or coat.  With the wet weather, a sweatshirt is not enough to keep them warm and dry outside at recess.

Coming up:

  • Thurs. Oct. 11- Math night for K-3, 5:30-6:30 pm
  • Friday Oct. 12- No school, teacher in-service day
  • Monday Oct. 15- Vision screening
  • Friday Oct. 19- Pumpkin patch field trip to The Farm at Swan’s Trail.  (Students may wear free dress.  Must bring car seat or booster for carpools.)
  • Friday Oct. 26- SMM carnival, 6:00-9:00 pm
  • Tuesday Oct. 30- Peace Day (students may wear a SMM peace shirt OR regular uniform)
  • Wednesday Oct. 31- Halloween: Kindergarten students may wear Halloween costume.  Please make sure your child can “do school” independently in their costume (i.e. run at recess and PE, use the restroom, etc.)  School policy states: no masks or items covering eyes/face, no weapons or play weapons, no clowns.  Dressing up is optional.  Students are encouraged to also dress up for All Saints Day, if they dress up for Halloween.
  • Thursday Nov. 1- All Saints Day.  Students may dress as their favorite saint.  Need ideas?  There are lots of easy and simple saint ideas on Pinterest, or check out these for inspiration:

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know!

Over the years, Mrs. White has taught many grade levels and subjects, but kindergarten is her absolute favorite! She loves being part of the early learning process and seeing the amazing connections that kindergarteners make every day. Some of Mrs. White's favorites, in no particular order: Dogs, Chocolate, Hiking, Books, and Snow!
