Weekly Update 10/27

Hello KA Families,

I hope many of you were able to enjoy the festivities of the SMM carnival last night!  This past week in kindergarten has been all about pumpkin science!  We observed the outside and inside of our class pumpkin, measured it, drew it, tested it in water (pumpkins float!) and counted the seeds.  We used ten frames to help count by tens.  Our pumpkin had 252 seeds!  You can check out pictures of this project and others on our class Instagram, “kakindofday.”

Coming up next week, we will be learning about Halloween, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day/Dia de los Muertos.  We will also be re-assessing student growth in the areas of letter recognition, letter sounds, and number recognition.  It is always really exciting to see how far the students have already come since the first week of school!

In reading this week, we will focus on the letter Tt, and the sight word “see.” You can help support your student in their learning by talking about letter sounds and sight words as you read together. In math, are using the numbers 0-5 including ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc.)  We will also begin working on comparing data from graphs, focusing on “more” and “fewer.”   In religion, we will be learning about some of the holy men and women from our church’s history, and why they have been identified as saints.

Reminders:

  • Please be mindful of our class safety policy of NO NUTS.  This includes all lunch and snack items, as well as party treats.  This is especially important to check with Halloween candy!
  • Signed progress reports are due back on Monday.
  • Library books are due back each Thursday.
  • Please be sure your child comes to school with a weather-appropriate jacket or coat.  With the chilly mornings, and wet weather returning, a sweatshirt is not enough to keep them warm and dry outside at recess.

Coming up:

  • Tuesday Oct. 30- Peace Day (students may wear a SMM peace shirt OR regular uniform)
  • Wednesday Oct. 31- Halloween: Kindergarten students may wear their Halloween costume to school.  Please make sure your child can “do school” independently in their costume (i.e. run at recess and PE, use the restroom, etc.)  School policy states: no masks or items covering eyes/face, no weapons or play weapons, no clowns.  Dressing up is optional.  Students are encouraged to also dress up for All Saints Day, if they dress up for Halloween.  We will be having a class Halloween party from about 10:40-11:40 including Halloween cookie decorating, bingo, and crafts.  Thank you to those who have volunteered to help at our party.
  • Thursday Nov. 1- All Saints Day.  Students may dress as their favorite saint.  Need ideas?  There are lots of easy and simple saint costume ideas on Pinterest, or check out these for inspiration:

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know!
