Weekly Update 12/7

Hello KA Families,

I hope you are all having a wonderful start to the Advent season!

This week in reading, we will focus on the letter Oo and the sight word “is”.  In math, we will be working on more/fewer, specifically 1 more and 1 fewer.  We will also introduce the concept of estimating.  In religion we will continue learning about the season of Advent, and the first Christmas. On Wednesday Dec. 12th we will celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe and learn more about Saint Juan Diego.

Coming up:

  • Afternoon pickup procedure changing on Monday : Beginning on December 10th, we will have a new pickup procedure at the end of the day.  (For those of you who have had older siblings in kindergarten before, this is a return to the older system.)  Kindergarten students will be signed out FROM THE CLASSROOM at the end of the day.  Parents, grandparents, or older siblings in third grade or higher, will come to the KA classroom and pick up their child from the room.  You may now park in the lower lot, and use the exterior stairway (by the new gym) to access the exterior KA door.  If you have any questions about this, please let me know.
  • Wednesday Dec. 12th, in celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe, there is a free all school lunch provided by the Latino Parents Group and Parents Club.  Please pack a snack for your student, but you do not need to pack a lunch (unless your child would rather have a lunch from home, or you are concerned about allergies.)  Many thanks to those who are helping provide this lunch!
  • Save the date: December 19th! The SMM All-School Christmas Program is on the evening of December 19th at the Everett Civic Auditorium at 6:30 pm.  This is an evening for students to dress up in their dressy holiday clothes or “Sunday best”.  Kindergarten students will sing three songs near the beginning of this program, and then will be excused to sit with their families.  *Some kindergarten families chose to leave after their children sing, and that is OK too.  It can be a late evening for young children.  **If you know ahead of time that your child will NOT be there, please let me know ahead of time so I can let the music teachers know.
  •  Friday December 21, Polar Express Pajama party in KA!  On our last day of school before Christmas, we will celebrate in KA with our traditional pajama party!  We get to wear pajamas, bring a small blanket and/or pillow from home, and watch the movie “Polar Express” on the big screen with hot cocoa and popcorn!  This is a half day, and school is out at 12:00 noon.

Looking ahead:

  • The kindergarten classes will begin attending Wednesday mass with the rest of the school on Jan. 16th.  Please note that the Wednesday bell rings at 8:15.  Please make sure to be on time!  We will go the classroom at 8:15 to drop off backpacks and take attendance, and then head straight to mass.  Kindergarten students will sit with their 6th grade buddies, along with the kindergarten and sixth grade teachers.  During the month of December and January, we will practice and prepare for mass.  This is also a great time to practice mass expectations with your kindergartener during weekend mass as well!
  • Beginning later in January, students will have PE in our new gym!  Students will need a separate pair of gym shoes to protect the new gym floor.  These shoes will stay here at school and be used only for use in the gym (not outside.)  Be on the lookout if you see a sale on shoes over the holidays!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know!
