Weekly Update 2/10

Hello KA Families,

Wow, what an exciting last week it has been, with snow days, late starts, and early dismissals!  I am not sure what this week will bring, but here is our current plan (assuming a regular week of school).

This week in reading, we will be focusing on the letter Ee and the sight words “this” and “do”.  In math, we are working on addition and we will also be studying teen numbers (they always start with a 1!)  We will also be working with our 100 chart, counting by tens, and finding missing numbers.  On Thursday we will celebrate Valentine’s Day by sharing cards and treats with our classmates.  We will also do a writing project about all of the people we love.  Mrs. Framel will teach a special lesson on kindness.

On Friday, some students began the kindergarten MAP assessment, and the rest will be completing it this week.  The kindergarten MAP assessment is a computer-based reading test that helps our school measure student growth and progress in reading skills between winter and spring.  The test takes about 15-30 minutes, and the students will take this now (winter) and again in May (spring).  This data will continue to be used to measure growth as the students move into first grade and beyond.

We have two special events coming up!  Thank you for your quick and generous response to the Sign-up for snack and supplies for our upcoming celebrations!

  • Thursday Feb. 14th is Valentine’s Day.  We will have an opportunity to share Valentines with our classmates to spread friendship and kindness.  We have 17 students in our class; please plan to send a Valentine card or small treat for each student in class.  *Please remember our classroom is nut-free!
  • Tuesday Feb. 19th  is the (new) 100th Day of School: The 100th Day of School is a big celebration in kindergarten!  We celebrate our success as we are more than half way to first grade, and we can count to 100 in many different ways.  We will have 100 snacks, write 100 words, play counting games, and we even get to dress up like we are 100 years old, such fun!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know!

White, Katie

Mrs. White is so excited for another great year in KA! She has been at SMM since 2014, and has been teaching in Catholic schools since 2002. Over the years, Mrs. White has taught many grade levels and subjects, but kindergarten is her absolute favorite! She loves being part of the early learning process and seeing the amazing connections that kindergarteners make every day. Mrs. White graduated with a BA in education and history from CWU (go Wildcats!) and earned a M.Ed. from Seattle U (go Redhawks!) She lives in Everett with her husband and two sons. Some of Mrs. White's favorites, in no particular order: Dogs, Chocolate, Hiking, Books, and Snow!
