Weekly Update 1/25

Hello KA Parents

We have had a great week, including our first MAP test in reading.  The students completed this test on the computer, and they did a great job of following directions and answering the questions!  Kindergarten students will take the reading test again in May.  This measure will provide meaningful information about student growth over time.  If you have any questions about this test, please let me know.

Coming next week: We will be focusing on the letter Dd and Rr, and the sight words “for” and “you.”  In math, we will be working on larger numbers, counting to 100 by 1s and 10s, and completing a 50 chart (and later a 100 chart).

***Please note: This week’s homework will include a bag for “100 things”: Please put 100 of the same items in the Ziploc bag.  (Make sure it is something you don’t need back!)  Ideas include cotton balls, beads, cheerios, straws, etc.  Be creative!  Your child can practice counting by 1s and by 10s for homework.  Parents, please check to make sure it is 100, as we will be using the following week in class for a special art project.

Catholic Schools Week is coming!  This is one of my favorite times of the year, as our school celebrates with Catholic schools across the nation, to recognize the important work and blessings of Catholic education

Sunday Jan. 28- Catholic Schools Week Begins.  Students, wear your uniform when you attend mass to show support for our school! SMM Open House 11:00-2:00.  I hope to see you there!  Please feel free to bring family , friends, and neighbors to show them all of the fantastic things happening at SMM, including our new upcoming full-day preschool and pre-k!

  • Monday Jan. 29- Free dress for anyone who wore uniform to mass.
  • Tuesday Jan. 30- Peace Day, students may wear their blue SMM peace shirts (or regular uniform)
  • Thursday Feb. 1- Special Person Day beginning at 1:15.  Students can invite a special visitor (parent, grandparent, aunt/uncle, etc.) to visit our classroom and attend the Distinguished Graduate Assembly.  Please let Mrs. White know who will be visiting the KA classroom!
  • Friday Feb. 2- Nations Day! Wear red, white, and blue OR the colors or traditional dress of their family’s heritage.  Dress to show your national pride!

Looking ahead:

  • 100th day of school is coming up on Friday Feb. 9th.  In KA, we celebrate the 100th day of school in a big way!  Students are invited to dress up like they are 100 years old (think grey hair, granny glasses, canes, etc.), and we will have a parade through the school to show everyone our counting skills.  Thank you to those who have signed up to bring items for our special 100 day snack!
  • Valentine’s day/Mardi Gras.  Since Valentine’s day falls on Ash Wednesday this year, we will celebrate Valentine’s day on Tues. Feb. 13th.  Students are invited to bring Valentine cards to share.  Please make sure to bring enough for every student in class; we have 18 students.    Thank you to those who have signed up to bring items for our Valentine Cookie decorating!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know!

All my best,

White, Katie

Mrs. White is so excited for another great year in KA! She has been at SMM since 2014, and has been teaching in Catholic schools since 2002. Over the years, Mrs. White has taught many grade levels and subjects, but kindergarten is her absolute favorite! She loves being part of the early learning process and seeing the amazing connections that kindergarteners make every day. Mrs. White graduated with a BA in education and history from CWU (go Wildcats!) and earned a M.Ed. from Seattle U (go Redhawks!) She lives in Everett with her husband and two sons. Some of Mrs. White's favorites, in no particular order: Dogs, Chocolate, Hiking, Books, and Snow!
