Weekly Update 1/25

Hello KA Families,

Happy Catholic Schools Week!  The SMM Open House is tomorrow, I hope to see you there!  You can stop by any time from 10:00-1:00.  If students attend mass and/or open house in their uniform, they may wear free dress on Monday.  Also, thank you for your thoughtful responses to the “parent homework”!  We have compiled these responses into a special display in the kindergarten hallway for Catholic Schools Week, and will also be making a special card for Father Olson and the parish.

This week in KA, we will be working on the letters Dd and Rr, and the sight words “for” and “you”.  In math, we are working on numbers 1-12, and using them in different ways.  In writing, students will be increasing their level of independence in writing, applying our knowledge of sight words, letter sounds, and best guess kindergarten spelling.  In religion, we will begin talking about Catholic schools week.  In social studies, we will be learning about Lunar New Year, and Groundhog Day!

Good work on the January homework.  Mrs. White and Mrs. Geppert check homework each Friday.  It will be collected on the last Friday of the month.  (This month, it will be collected on Friday 1/31.)

Coming Up:

  • Sunday Jan. 26th– Open House 10-1, bring your family, friends, and neighbors!  Come visit all the classrooms, and show off our school! Meet your future first grade teachers, too.  I hope to see you there.  (Also, students who wear their uniforms to Mass will earn free dress Monday the 27th)
  • Tuesday Jan. 28th– PEACE day, students may with their blue SMM Peace shirts, or regular uniform.  This is “student appreciation” day too, so we will get a movie break after lunch!
  • Friday Jan. 31- Distinguished Alumni Assembly and Prayer Service, 2:00 in parish hall.

Looking ahead:

-We will celebrate Valentine’s Day in class on Feb. 13th.

-Our 100th day of school will be on Feb. 21st.  This is an exciting celebration of math and learning!  Kindergarteners will have an (optional) opportunity to dress up too- like we are 100 years old!

Weekly Update 1/18

Hello KA Families,

What a crazy week it has been!  I hope you all were able to enjoy the snow days.  It was fun having the snow, but I was missing our KA class!  I am looking forward to a somewhat normal week ahead.  This week in KA, we will continue working on the letter Hh, and the sight word “are”.  In math, we are working on numbers 6-12.  In writing, students will be increasing their level of independence in writing, applying our knowledge of sight words, letter sounds, and best guess kindergarten spelling.  In religion, we will begin talking about Catholic schools week, and what makes our school so special.

If you have a chance at home, it is a great time to talk with your child about our Catholic school.  Why do you choose Catholic school for your child?  How did  your family make this important decision?  What does your family love best about SMM?  If you are willing to share your ideas with me (email is great!) we will include these in a special project for our school and parish.  Thank  you in advance!  Every year, Catholic Schools week is one of my favorite times of year.  I love knowing that Catholic school teachers, students, and families across the country are celebrating what makes our schools vibrant, faith-filled, and successful learning communities.

Weekly Newsletter 1/10

Hello KA Families,

Happy Friday!  With the wintery weather, please make sure to send your child to school with weather-appropriate coat, etc. for recess.  Hats and gloves are a great idea too!  Please keep in mind that if there is a school cancellation or late start due to the weather, the school will communicate through Flash Alert (please sign up for this text/email service if you haven’t already), as well as news coverage.

Happy New Year!  Wow, 2020!  I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas with family and loved ones. This week in KA, we will review the letters Oo and Ff, and the sight words “is” and “play”.  In math, we will continue our unit on shapes, symmetry, and equal parts.  We will begin a unit on numbers 6-12.  In religion, we will be learning about Epiphany.  In social studies and science, we will be learning about snow and polar bears. 

The new January homework packet will be coming home on Monday.  Mrs. White and Mrs. Geppert check homework each Friday.  It will be collected on the last Friday of the month.  (This month, it will be collected on Friday 1/31.)  

Coming Up:

Friday Jan. 17th– noon dismissal

Monday Jan. 20th– MLK, Jr. Day, no school

Hello KA Families,

Please note there are two special Christmas items coming home in backpacks tonight:

  • One is a gift to you (parents) from your child!
  • One is a gift to students from Mrs. White and Mrs. Geppert!

This week in KA, we will focus on the letter Ff, and the sight word “play”.  In math, we will continue our unit on shapes, symmetry, and equal parts.   In religion, we will be learning about the first Christmas.

Mrs. White and Mrs. Geppert check homework each Friday.  It will be collected on the last Friday of the month.  (This month, it will be collected on Friday 12/20.)

Coming Up:

  • TONIGHT! Friday Dec. 13th is the all-school Christmas program, at the Everett Civic Auditorium: 2415 Colby Avenue, Everett WA 98201.  The performance begins at 7:00, please have your child arrive by 6:45.  KA students will line up with their teacher in the hallway to the left of the stage.  The kindergarteners will be singing near the beginning of the performance, and then will come to sit with parents for the remainder of the show (you will want to save a seat for them, or they can sit on your lap!  Some families with young children choose to leave after their kindergartener’s performance, and that is ok too!)  This is a night for students to dress up in their holiday clothes or Sunday best.  Parents will hold on to coats.
  • Tuesday, Dec. 17th is Peace Day.  Students may wear their blue SMM peace shirts (or regular uniform).
  • Friday Dec. 20th is a half day, noon dismissal (no lunch period).  This will be a “pajama day” party for KA.  We will get to wear pajamas to school, watch a movie (The Star), and enjoy cocoa and popcorn.

Hello KA Families,

This week in KA, we will focus on the letter Oo, and the sight word “is”.  In math, we will continue our unit on shapes, and learn about symmetry and equal parts.   In religion, we will be learning about Advent and what it means to prepare for the birth of Jesus.

Coming Up:

KA Weekly Update 11/21

Hello KA Families,

I am looking forward to meeting with each of you in the next few days for conferences.  We will celebrate the growth your children have already made in kindergarten, and look ahead to future goals for the rest of the year.

The children enjoyed a special Thanksgiving lunch today.  In addition to their own lunch, they had the opportunity to sample turkey, pumpkin pie, and apple cider.  They loved sitting together in a large “banquet” table to celebrate and give thanks.

I can’t believe it is almost December, and Advent is nearly here!

Next week in KA, we will be reviewing the letters Nn and Cc, and the sight word “have”.  In math, we will begin a new unit about plane shapes, and continue working on “more” and “fewer” with graphing.   In religion, we will be learning about Advent and what it means to prepare for the birth of Jesus.  In science, we will be learning about hibernating animals.

The new December homework calendar will be sent home on Monday 12/2.  Mrs. White and Mrs. Geppert check homework each Friday.  It will be collected on the last Friday of the month.  (This month, it will be collected on Friday 12/20.)

Coming Up:

  • Book Fair- Our class will visit the book fair during library class on Thursday Dec. 5th.  If you would like to send money with your child to shop for a book, please put it in a baggie with their name.  Please note there is sales tax, so a book that costs $5 will actually cost about $5.50 to purchase. (You may also visit the book fair before or after school with your family.)
  • Friday Dec. 13th is the all-school Christmas program, at the Everett Civic Auditorium.  Save the date for this evening event!  The kindergarteners will be singing near the beginning of the performance.  Stay tuned for more details coming soon.
